The U.S. Air Force Academy, commonly referred to as simply USAFA or Air Force, is a an accredited college for the undergraduate education of commissioned officers for the United States Air Force, with the main campus located just north of Colorado Springs, which is the county seat, as well as the most populated city of El Paso County, located in the US state of Colorado, having a population of approximately 415 000 inhabitants (2009).
USAFA was established in 1954, and represents the newest service academy in USA. The creation of the academy was authorized in 1954, by the Congress, and one year later, on July 11, the first classes were given to a class of 306 men, at Lowry Air Force Base, in Denver, CO. On August 29, 1958, the Air Force Academy moved to its current location, less than one year later, receiving its accreditation.
Today, Air Force Academy is known as one of the most selective colleges in USA, its program being guided by the Air Force’s core values of `Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do`, based on 4 `pillars of excellence`: academics, military training, character development and athletics. In addition to the rigorous military training regimen, the cadets are also given a broad academic course load in humanities, engineering, basic and social sciences, military studies and physical education.
The intercollegiate athletic teams from USAFA are known as the Air Force Falcons, who compete in the NCAA in 17men’s and 10 women’s sports, including football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse, polo, wrestling and several other sports. The Academy also sponsors 2 non-NCAA programs, which are cheerleading and boxing, and it also has several club sports, such as rugby.
In addition to the NCAA, USAFA also competes in the Division I FBS for football, most of the teams being in the Mountain West Conference, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, for gymnastics and men’s soccer, in the Atlantic Hockey, for men’s hockey, the Western Water Polo Association, for water polo and in the National Collegiate Boxing Association, for men’s boxing. The Falcons have experienced success in almost all their sports, in the past years, including in boxing, in which they won a total of 18 national championships, being led by Coach Ed Weichers, for 31 years.
